MUSIC MATTERS

USE YOUR VOICE

To have a voice is a privilege, and with privilege comes power and responsibility. We each have an opportunity, a sheer natural instinct, to use what we’ve been given to make things better. Physics tells us that everything has an energetic frequency, and music, the flower of sound, is the most powerful one we have built in access to!

Singing is about more than just singing

MY STORY

The first time I felt good singing was at 6 years old when my father told me I had natural vibrato. I began auditioning for solos at school and church and conquering my nerves. Around my junior year of high school I noticed my voice felt funny hitting certain high notes and there was a new break in my voice. Not wanting to let anyone down, I pushed through. I saw the doctor when my voice was so damaged I would go completely hoarse after every performance. Nodules had formed on my vocal chords. They form for various reasons, but in my case it was the irritation of the larynx caused by acid reflux. You can imagine my heart break when the doctor told me the only solution was surgery and the surgery itself was risky and could change my voice for the rest of my life. Not wanting to take that risk, I used natural methods to regain much of my range and learned new techniques to work with the range I had. The things I learned saved my voice and gave me hope. I now have a fierce desire to pass on the knowledge and experience I've gained to assist others in their vocal journey!

-Customize my lesson plan to each student based on skill level, music and personal goals, personality, etc.

-Update my curriculum regularly in the lovely age of information and technology!

-Online lessons. All that's needed is your smart phone! No need to use valuable time and money traveling to and from a lesson

MY EXPERIENCE

I have 15 years of experience as a vocalist and 10 as a mentor. I began singing in school and church choirs in 1997, becoming my junior high school worship band manager in 2001. During those years I took piano and voice lessons from multiple teachers and created a foundation of knowledge that is still serving me today. I also participated in theater and consistently wrote music of my own, while taking on various leadership roles in Jazz Choir, theater, and various praise and worship bands. In 2008 I attended a two year leadership internship and served as a worship pastor, children’s pastor (all ages), mentor, and service coordinator. More recently I worked as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
